Easy DIY bedroom update on a budget

Back in 2017, just before our youngest, Ava, was born, we made over our master bedroom to create a beautiful Hygge-inspired bedroom to share with our newborn baby girl. It was the perfect little nest but over the years our room has changed… Ava moved into her own bedroom, the bedding had given us its best years and we have space to fill where all the baby items were. It was high time for a bedroom update on a budget – because when you’re a parent, “YOUR STUFF” is always on a budget, right?
let’s kick off with a before photo…

The 3 main areas of concern:
- As mentioned, our bedding was in desperate need of an update.
- Neither of us had functional bedside tables which made the bedroom feel cluttered and untidy.
- The room felt “empty and cold” now that most of the baby items were gone.
So, where to start…
We wanted to make a change but this was a bedroom update on a budget, not an entire makeover. A quick and easy project that didn’t require months of saving or planning…
Step 1: Be bold! add an accent wall…
Nothing freshens up a space like a new lick of paint. And it’s definitely the cheapest way to transform a room, instantly giving a new look and feel.

We chose DeCO Professional sheen acrylic “Burnished Green” with an ultra satin base. Mixed by Paint Library, our local paint store.

Green has always been one of my favourite colours. Found everywhere in nature, green makes us feel calm, relaxed and positive. It’s also very easy on the eyes and not a shade one grows tired of quickly. After a month in our new bedroom, I can honestly say we still love our green wall. It laid the foundation for our new sleep sanctuary.
Step 2: Declutter & Organise
I enjoy reading in bed and so does Mr. Perfect, from time to time. We also like keeping our Bibles close and the girls often surprise us with special cards and letters on our pillows. A Netflix & Chill on my laptop during winter does happen seeing as we don’t have (or want) a television in our bedroom. All of these take up space, usually on the tiny table next to our bed – it’s clutter central and we HATE it.
The tiny table needed to go and was replaced by 2 gorgeous solid Acacia wood bedside tables we found instore from @HOME. Spacious and sturdy, perfectly complimenting our existing bed.

Step 3: Get cozy…
One of our BEST buys ever (it was actually a wedding gift from our dad) has to be our Granny Goose down & feather duvet. FOURTEEN years later and it’s still as fluffy as ever. Warm in winter, cool in summer. I can’t recommend investing in one of these enough! The quality and comfort make our bedding feel 5-star, hotel standard.

Another local brand we’ve only heard good things about is The T-Shirt Bed Co. We simply had to give their luxurious, non-iron, crease-proof, 100% cotton jersey knit bedding a try for ourselves. Breathable, cool, easy to care for, eco-friendly and made in Cape Town, South Africa. It ticks all the boxes!

We decided on the new “Earth Shade” duvet set (available in sizes single to superking). It’s the perfect neutral to our green wall and actually matched our existing curtains and rug – a bonus seeing as we could save on the budget by not needing to replace either.
Extra Moola meant extra pretty bits could be added to our “bedroom update on a budget”
Now that we have all the basics sorted, it’s time for some fun… styling! Accessories are a fantastic way to incorporate touches of trends we love into a space. Black finishes and terracotta is a 2022 focus and looks incredible with green. These 3 colours play beautifully creating just the right amount of drama and warmth while still keeping our boudoir a peaceful refuge.
- Superbalist has the greatest selection of scatter cushions! The colour and design variety is unreal. I could easily cover half our bed with stunning scatters BUT Mr. Perfect isn’t a fan of the “full” look. So, I rather went with a pair of 60cm x 60cm cushions made from shaggy Sherpa. The colour and size make a statement while still keeping the overall look modern and minimalist.

- White, linen pillow covers for our king-size pillows add a clean contrast in colour and texture.
- Quilts and throws add layers of interest. I found our green Harper quilt on sale on Superbalist but MRP Home always has a great selection as well.

- New bedside tables need new bedlamps but we had no idea how expensive lamps are! We searched high and low and finally found the Amber Desk Lamp. Choosing desk lamps gave us more surface space for a few other pretty extras…
- Mr. Perfect already had a hanging plant on his side of the bed. I wanted to echo the same on my side and added my own indoor baby in a terracotta planter. Now just for a scented candle in a gold bowl and we’re done.

- On “his” side, I added a terracotta figure vase found at Typo with an Amamda-Jayne scented candle in a golden tin as well as a retro alarm clock. (We want our bedroom to be a no-device zone so no more cellphone alarms for us.)
And for the final touch…
Art! Unfortunately, this is where the budget ran out. I had my eye on some amazing works by our favourite local artists from Kindred but our big wall calls for big pieces (A1 big…) so we need to save. In the meantime, however, I created a meaningful print that I’m sharing with everyone that may be in need of a “space saver” too.

May this little “space saver” be a blessing to you too whether you print it as a card or a wall print sizes A8 to A0.
And that’s our revamped bedroom!
