Why Pure Beginnings Organic Skincare is best for your baby!

by | Apr 10, 2025 | Baby's First Year, Clean Beauty, Eco-Friendly Living, Made in South Africa, Things we love | 60 comments

Since falling pregnant with our firstborn in 2011, Pure Beginnings has been the number 1 skincare brand used for our babies. Four kids later and we still haven’t found a better option, hence this blogpost… We want all parents to know how easy it is to choose organic and why organic skincare can be a good option for your baby too.

Why go organic?

Organic skincare avoids synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, and harsh preservatives that might irritate sensitive skin and that are linked to other more serious health concerns.

Aren’t all things “natural”, also organic?

A lot of skincare brands use misleading marketing tactics to make their products appear organic or at least a “cleaner” option.

  • Using vague descriptions that aren’t backed by any form of verification such as; “sustainable”, “pure”, “natural”, “clean”, “chemical-free” – a phrase completely misleading in itself seeing as all things consists of chemicals.
  • Branding in earth tones showcasing plants and nature to imply eco-friendly values.
  • Highlighting one natural ingredient or the tiny amount used in a product, while ignoring the rest of the formula which may contain harmful and unsustainable components.
  • Using alternative names for controversial ingredients and claiming to be “paraben-free” or “sulfate-free” while still using other irritants and harmful alternatives.

The list goes on and on…

So, how do I ensure a product is truly organic?

Look for these key indicators:

1. Certified Organic Labels

Check for certifications from reputable organisations, such as:
‱ ECOCERT (Europe)
‱ USDA Organic (United States)
‱ Soil Association (UK)
‱ BDIH (Germany)
‱ Australian Certified Organic (ACO)
‱ SAOSO (South African Organic Sector Organisation) – when buying locally in South Africa

2. The Ingredients List

‱ Look for plant-based ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, coconut oil, and calendula.
‱ Avoid synthetic chemicals such as parabens, sulfates (SLS/SLES), artificial fragrances, and petroleum-based ingredients.
‱ Check for percentage claims – Some brands may say “made with organic ingredients” but only contain a small percentage of organic content.

3. Third-Party Verification

If a product claims to be organic but has no certification, research the brand’s website or contact customer support to ask for ingredient sourcing details and third-party testing.

4. Packaging Claims & Marketing Terms

‱ “Natural” and “green” do not mean organic. These terms are often used for marketing.
‱ “100% organic” means all ingredients are certified organic, while “made with organic ingredients” usually means only a portion of the formula is organic.

More reasons why we choose Pure Beginnings Organic Skincare

  1. It’s a family-owned and -run company.
  2. All products are free from the chemicals found in many conventional personal care products and the raw ingredients used are free from any residual chemicals that may be present as a result of farming practices.
  3. Products are pH-balanced to match that of the skin, and any ingredients that disrupt the skin’s pH are excluded. Only ultra-mild surfactants which do not strip the skin of its natural oils, or cause skin irritation are used.
  4. Natural vegetable oils are used as the base, thereby avoiding petrochemicals completely.
  5. Essential oils are used for their therapeutic properties, and to add natural fragrances. All non-certified synthetic fragrances and colourants are avoided.
  6. As an African company, Pure Beginnings appreciates that many of our indigenous plants have had to adapt to the harshest conditions to survive, and because of these adaptations, produce some of the most powerful ingredients. They specialise in combining unique African ingredients with traditional botanicals to produce products with exceptional efficacy.
  7. Biodiversity preservation is also extremely important to the pure Beginnings team. Therefore all ingredients are ethically sourced from rural communities in Southern Africa.
  8. The bum cream is cloth diaper friendly.
  9. The range is made locally and easily accessible from various retailers such as Dis-Chem, Baby City, Takealot, Woolworths, Clicks, Faithful to Nature and most other health stores.
  10. The brand is always evolving to include products of the highest standards such as the new Sensitive Baby range – set to launch soon (WATCH THIS SPACE).
