Want, Need, Read, Wear Christmas Gift Guides for kids

Nov 28, 2019
Best Toys For Kids 2019

What do I buy for my baby? What toys will my toddler actually play with and how many gifts are enough? That’s the questions I’ve been asked at least once a day for the past 2 weeks and with Christmas less than a month away I’ve finally complete our Christmas Gift Guides for kids.

In the hopes of being more mindful we have adopted the “4 gift rule“, also known as the “Want, Need, Read and Wear” approach. After so many readers and followers recommended this last year, we simply had to give it a go. It’s such a clever concept and makes gift shopping far less stressful.

How does it work?

  • Choose one item the person really WANTS – That one item at the top of their wish list.
  • The next gift would be something they NEED – This is where the practical purchases come in but remember to still have fun.
  • Now for something to WEAR – This could also be practical like new sneakers or something completely fun like matching holiday tees. For less festive options have a look at our “What We Wear” section.
  • The last gift would be something to READ – Books are never a bad idea, no matter the occasion. We will only list a few below so be sure to check out our “read” section on the blog too. Simply CLICK HERE.

So, grab a cup of cocoa, sit back and enjoy our 2019 Christmas Gift Guides for kids: Want, Need, Read, Wear Edition.

Want Need Wear And Read Gift Guides For toddlers Books

Find all the titles mentioned above at:

Being a toddler isn’t easy. You have to learn to deal with so many new milestones (potty training, going to school, sleeping in a “big” bed) and life changes (addition of siblings). Frustrations and emotions are all over the show and on most days meltdowns do occur. As parents we need to be empathetic towards our little toddlers, understanding they are only just beginning to understand the world and themselves.

When buying books for your toddler keep the following in mind:

  • Choose themes that provide reassurance of your love for them
  • Collect stories dealing with emotions your child may be experiencing. Discuss these stories and highlight the positive coping strategies reflected.
  • Look for books that are relatable. Eg. topics such as potty training, becoming a big brother or sister, starting school, etc.
  • Still, include interactive books. Sound queue books are a hit at this age
  • Foster a love for reading from an early age by including fun, silly books that speak to your little ones naive sense of humor.
  • Stories should still be short and sweet with the illustrations telling the story as well.
  • Young brains are little sponges. Don’t be scared to expose them to other languages as well.

Most of these books are available at leading bookstore and online on Takelot.com or Readers Warehouse.

10. My “Eerste Woordeboek – Afrikaans, Engels, Xhosa” might be tricky to find. Contact Prettish Books.

Shopping for books at this age is so much FUN! All we really need to aim for is to keep things interesting…

A few tips:

  • Look for known favourites but with a new spin like the fairytale series (5). Suddenly Snow White is a soccer player and Sleeping Beauty doesn’t want to wake up.
  • Include timeless classics like The Velveteen Rabbit (1) and How the Grinch stole Christmas (9).
  • Stories about “real people” such as the Little People, BIG DREAMS (6) collection are inspirational and fantastic early biographies showing how different people can accomplish great things.
  • Text rich stories can be included but remember illustrations are still very important.
  • Look for early readers that can be read independently. Grade 1’s can also do with some extra practice. (8)
  • And because it’s Christmas, definitely include The Christmas Story.

Most of these books are available at leading bookstore and online on Takelot.com or Readers Warehouse.
