“Binding generations together more than any other animated character, Mickey Mouse is the “True Original” who reminds people of all ages of the benefits of laughter, optimism and hope.”
And in our home things are no different. We adore Mickey Mouse! The charming, ever optimistic, leader of the pack is forever entwined in our own childhood memories and now we get to share the magic of Mickey with our kids.
Over the past 90 years Mickey (1st named Mortimer) has appeared in more than a 120 animated titles, he also appears in the world’s most famous theme parks and stars in multiple touring productions such as Disney On Ice (another family favourite) and Disney Live!
Now, what better way to celebrate Mickey’s 90th than with a trip down memory lane…
1928 – 18 November 1928: Mickey enters the history books when Steamboat Willie is the 1st theatrically released cartoon with a synchronised soundtrack.
1929 – Mickey utters his 1st words… “Hot dogs!” in The Karnival Kid.
1930 – The first licensed Disney merchandise is sold; a Mickey Mouse child’s writing tablet.
1932 – Walt Disney receives one of his 1st Academy Awards – a special award for the creation of Mickey Mouse.
1935 – Mickey’s 1st theatrically released short in colour – The Band Concert.
1955 – 17 July 1955: Disneyland Park opens. 3 October 1955: The Mickey Mouse Club airs on ABC.
1978 – 13 November 1978: For Mickey’s 50th birthday he receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame making Mickey Mouse the 1st animated character to be honoured with a star.
1992 – Disneyland, Paris opens.
I was lucky enough to celebrate my 30th birthday there with Mickey and friends. Maybe one day I’ll get to do it again… Perhaps my 90th?
2013 – Mickey’s Oscar nominated animated short Get a Horse! is released in cinemas.
The world is obsessed and celebrating Mickey with fun fashion, bold art, toys and collectables. We couldn’t resist having our own party. Cake, confetti and dressed in the coolest Mickey gear. Happy 90th Birthday Mickey Mouse! We love you, the girls love you and one day we know their kids (and their kids) will love you too.
And in closing… In the words of Walt Disney;
“I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – That it was all started by a mouse.”
Today’s post wouldn’t be complete without one more happy birthday wish to the “First Lady” of Disney, Minnie Mouse. Minnie also made her debut in Steamboat Willie. Confident, fun-loving and a spirited girl’s girl. Congratulations Minnie and also for receiving your own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this year. Thank you for being Mickey’s sweetheart and a true gal pal.
