Fashion for mammas Things we love

STYLE THE BUMP: Winter Maternity Fashion.

Jun 23, 2017

So here we are, almost at the end of our pregnancy journey and about to welcome our 3rd little blessing. Over the past few months I’ve loved sharing some fantastic bump style and even getting to spoil some of you too. Together with top proudly South African brands I’ve learned a lot about dressing while pregnant and look forward to the next chapter in post-pregnancy and breastfeeding wear but first I need to share my favourite winter maternity fashion!

Let’s start with the basics…

I am a Yummy Mummy! 100% and now that Yummy Maternity has gone bamboo, I love them even more! Not only is bamboo a “green” choice, it’s also incredibly soft, antibacterial and hypoallergenic – all fabulous for sensitive pregnant skin. Bamboo is thermo-regulating and keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter so one layer is enough, no need to bother with vests, stockings and more. Another reason I love bamboo clothes… It feels new after every wash and never seems to lose its shape. I will definitely still be wearing these for a while postpartum.

I can’t live without my Yummy Maternity Bamboo Extra Length Leggings and Yummy Maternity Bamboo Long Sleeve Tank Tops.

Most of my outfit choices start with these two and I just add accessories, a jersey or coat… It’s easy, it’s warm and I feel comfortable. (Comfort and fashion might not always go hand-in-hand but when it come to maternity fashion it’s essential).

Look 1: Basic black layers.

To me winter is the fashion season of the year. I love the layers, colours and textures that always come with the trends. Knits and hats are my go-to and gets me feeling stylish. For this 1st look I kept things very simple; a pair of black Yummy Maternity Bamboo Extra Length Leggings and a Long Sleeve Tank Top. Add a grey chunky knit waterfall jersey (Forever New has a great selection) and a medium brim felt hat from Cotton OnSling an Alex & Marla Handmade Leather Bag over the shoulder and you are good to go! School-run, coffee date or just running errands, all while looking and feeling good.

This Leather Duffel Bag  from their Vintage Collection is stunning and practical. Big enough to fit everything I need as well as some extras for the girls and the internal pockets keeps everything organised. Being genuine leather and scratch-resistant means this handbag will last you a life-time. Truly a worthwhile buy.

Look 2: Same-same but different.

Still in my black Yummy Maternity Bamboo Extra Length Leggings and a Long Sleeve Tank Top I just swapped out a jersey for a trench, (you may remember mine from a previous feature – wink, wink). THE TRENCH! A classic piece everyone should own.  Again, Forever New has the most gorgeous styles, year after year. Go spoil yourself and buy one, I promise you won’t regret it. Casual, lace-up high top boots, fun winter socks from Woolworths and a snood knitted by my own mama gives me a cozy winter feel. Dainty jewellery by Dear Rae and Pernickety Jewellery and a fab Alex & Marla Duffel Bag takes this basic look to classic elegance.

Look 3: Go grey instead of black.

If black isn’t your thing or you just want a “softer” look why not go for grey! You can still dress it up with a great winter coat and scarf. If you are feeling a little daring… add a large brim felt hat (another Cotton On find) and make it sexy with heels – but only if it’s a short outing – heels in the 3rd trimester can be tricky.

I’ve had this Jenny Button coat for years as well as my Luella stilettos and still they stay pretty and in-style. Just  another reason to invest in a few quality, classic pieces you’ll wear year-after-year.

Look 4: Same bottom, new top.

Everyone likes a bit of variation and if it’s choice you’re looking for meamama is your next “click”. They have a beautiful collection of maternity and breastfeeding styles and the best part about everything they design… you can wear the same size you normally wear. Every garment is designed to adapt to your changing body so that you feel and look amazing the whole way through pregnancy. They want you to show-off your bump and with some clever ruching, belly-bands, stretch and tailoring in all the right places, a perfect bump silhouette is achieved.

Being at the end of my pregnancy I am starting to look into breast-feeding and pregnancy friendly tops. The meamama coco wrap breastfeeding long sleeve top looks gorgeous hugging my tummy and with the ruched sides it will be hiding the after-baby tummy flab too. The neckline wraps across the bust into a V-shape that is very flattering especially on larger milk-filled busts and can be pulled to the side for easy no-fuss breast-feeding. Garnet was my colour choice for this shoot but I will definitely be ordering navy and khaki soon.Off course I had to accessorise with a beanie, scarf and ankle boots from Foshini.

Look 5 and 6: Lets get “dressy”.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to be covered up from head to toe. meamama has the coolest selection of modern maternity dresses and if I found them earlier I would have loved to do an entire feature just on how great I think all these different styles are but that will have to wait for baby number 4… (hehe – famous last words).

Dresses don’t always have to be fancy and pretty. They can also be fun, edgy and fashion forward, even when you have a baby in your belly. This meamama oversized, knit, jersey dress makes me feel young and cool and gets the thumbs up from the girls and Mr. Perfect. It has to be the pockets, anytime a dress has pockets it’s instantly fun! Being knitted means its warm and snuggly fits over my curves. Paired with velvet knee-high boots – a steal from mrp Clothing – a beanie and the right attitude and I feel ready to go enjoy whatever we have planned.

Cherry Melon is another trusted maternity range I have been supporting from my 1st pregnancy. They also boast with a wide range of styles from tops, bottoms, dresses, skirts and even sleepwear. Quality and affordability is key and they strive to provide mama’s with a wide selection in styles to choose from.

For a fancy date-night option I went with their Long Sleeve Cocktail Wrap Dress. A take on the classic LBD with a pregnant and breast-feeding mama in mind. Gauging at the sides and shoulders will accommodate growth (and shrinkage) of your belly and burst line. The mock front crossover assures easy access too. Long sleeves and an asymmetrical hem line gives this dress a modern look. All it needs is some good shoes and your ready to WOW hubby, go for a mocktail or party till your feet can’t keep up.

One last thought…

Essential to all of my Style the Bump looks as well as winter maternity fashion, has been to keep things simple. Don’t layer too much and being bigger doesn’t mean you have to cover-up more. This usually leads to mamas looking and feeling even BIGGER! You are not as fat or huge as you feel! Own your bigger and better and more gorgeous self, because you ARE still beautiful!

Special thanks to Alex & Marla for providing the stunning handmade leather Duffel, Blos Café for letting us hang out and Colour Cut Lounge Hair Salon in Atterbury Boulevard for making my hair beautiful.
