According to Vogue’s Fashion Encyclopedia, jumpsuits were originally created in 1919 for parachuters and then first worn by women during World War II. The jumpsuit struggled to find its place in the fashion world. Reimagined as evening wear by fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s for her more affluent clientele – jumpsuits still didn’t gain mass-appeal. It would once again make a return to the party scene in the 1950’s through American designer Bonnie Cashin. However, the fashion-industry needed another decade, designer Guy Laroche, photographer Irving Penn and the September 1964 issue of Vogue to finally welcome this utility garment into an everlasting trend. Jumpsuits were so big, even men wore them…
