Spring Clean your Morning Routine – 6 ways to start the day better

I am not a morning person but, as our girls grow older I’ve come to realise the value of a good morning routine. Not just for the kids but for mom too. So, over the past few months, I worked towards creating better daily habits that bring about a positive change and today I’m sharing what I’ve learned. 6 ways to start the day better! A daily routine that gives me the kickstart I need to tackle the day ahead, whatever it may hold. Now, I actually look forward to my morning “me-time”.

Firstly, just know, there’s no such thing as a perfect, one-size-fits-all routine.

We all differ. From our likes and dislikes, the season of life we may be in, personality types and even work responsibilities. All of this needs to be taken into account when creating “your ideal” morning routine. Still, one thing is sure, we can all benefit from starting our day well. That’s why I wanted to share the changes I made, specifically in this season of motherhood when finding time to prioritise myself seems non-existent. 6 Habits that enable me to start my day with intention and purpose, while also giving me extra time to spend invest in myself.

Wake up before everyone else

This isn’t easy for me. I am a night-owl and tend to stay up way too late but now that the girls are back at school it’s important to start the day calm and energized. That’s why I need to wake up before they do. I need to give myself at least 45minutes to clear my mind, set my goals for the day and take care of myself first. I need to fill my “cup” for the day before I try to fill theirs.

Hydrate!

Before I go to bed at night, I make sure to put a glass of water on my bedside table. We wake up dehydrated and drinking water first thing in the morning will help your body and mind wake up.

Now you’re good to have that 1st cup of coffee (or tea if you are like me). It’s something so small but I’ve already seen results in only 3 months of use without needing to do anything else except enjoying my cup of tea.

Start the day with God

As a Christian, this is core to starting my day better. I find a comfy spot, with my tea and Bible in hand, usually paired with a devotional too. I pray and thank God for the gift of another day, listing at least 3 things I am grateful for (a practice even non-religious individuals can benefit from) and asking Him to guide me for whatever lies ahead.

Recently I’ve also started asking God to open my eyes to the hidden joy and beauty found in the mundane. The everyday moments of motherhood and home-making. I am working towards cultivating a sense of gratefulness and appreciation for what I have but so easily take for granted.

Quiet your mind

Journaling is a great way to quiet a busy mind. It helps to focus thoughts and provides clarity of what’s most important.

Bullet journals are amazing and a wonderful creative outlet but it can be intimidating too. That’s why I enjoy using my INSPIRED | CHANGE Journal as a daily journal to help keep track of the goals I’ve set for myself. It’s not my “to-do” list, but rather life goals such as being more mindful, eco-friendly, working towards a more active lifestyle, bettering myself and also being better to myself. It includes 100 days of undated pages filled with prompts and questions that helped me set and structure my goals and intentions and also has guidelines and inspirational quotes that get my creative juices flowing each morning.

Morning Routine Ideas For Moms

It helps keep track of my goals and has been transformative in the best way possible. I find that putting whatever may be dancing in my mind to paper sets me free! My mind can let go of all the clutter focussing only on what’s needed. I feel less anxious and learn a lot about myself as I doodle and write.

Plan and organise

Now that you’ve taken care of yourself it’s time to see what the day ahead holds. Get out that to-do list, diaries and planners. Plan out the tasks and duties that need your attention whether it’s at work or at home.

The 1st Monday of every month is spent with my calendar book. I add all the most important dates to remember, as well as birthdays and appointments already scheduled. Every week thereafter I use my Weekly notepad to prepare for the specific week. Then every morning it’s easy to just do a quick daily to-do list. I write down the day’s tasks in order of importance and tick them off as I go. Whatever doesn’t get done, moves onto the next day but over time I’ve actually become really good at having realistic expectations for the day.

Move that body

Everything mentioned up to here usually happens within the first hour of waking up. Now it’s time for the rest of the house to start their day as well and I need to get moving. I battled to get into a good exercise routine for years and still do. On most days I don’t feel like doing a workout at all BUT I’m always happy afterwards.

A good tip is putting on your workout clothes before finding an excuse to not do it. We get the kids ready and after they leave I do a quick 20-minute session at home. I aim for 3 morning workouts a week (if you need some mommy-and-me exercise ideas, have a look HERE). One the other days I take our border collie, Luna, for a brisk walk around the neighbourhood. When the girls where little I would take them for a walk in their stroller too or they joined me while working out.

Maybe jogging, pilates or yoga is more your speed. Just something to raise that heartbeat and get those “feel good” endorphins flowing at the beginning of the day. It will definitely help improve your mindset for the day ahead. I’ve recently taken a break from working out but after starting again, just yesterday, I’m already hooked.
