We knew we wanted to do something special for Ava’s 1st birthday. First birthdays are a BIG deal to us. (See Eliana’s and Lia’s here). The first 12 months of having a baby is stressful, challenging, amazing, sad, wonderful and joyous – All rolled into one. We like taking a moment, not just to honour baby’s 1st year but also to celebrate the “new family” we’ve become.
Ava shares a birth date, July 6th, with one of my favourite “sheroes”; Frida Kahlo. So, from day one I knew Ava would have a Frida Kahlo inspired 1st birthday party, no wait, fiesta!
Bright, bold colours. Delicious, flavour-packed food. Feminine, floral, fun!
Where to start…
Pinterest, of course. There wasn’t much to find under Frida Kahlo inspired birthday party ideas, so instead I searched for DIY Mexican fiestas. The food had me drooling and the colourful decor is sheer happiness – Perfect for our little lady. Now just to figure out how I would do it all.
Then something amazing happened…
Poppit & Finch contacted me.
Leandrie du Plessis is a talented photographer with years of experience in the wedding industry. She captures memories in an honest and beautiful way for her clients to enjoy forever. Being a mom herself, she knows how precious each birthday is and together with her team of talented photographers and videographers she founded Poppit & Finch. A newly launched kids party inspiration website showcasing the most gorgeous kids party and celebration ideas and inspiration. We feel honoured to be one of the first parties featured in the site.
Best of all, it’s not just pretty pictures… The website includes the Poppit & Finch online directory (coming soon). Now you can find service providers for every pretty detail seen in the incredible parties featured on the site.
Moms are also able to book a photographer and / or videographer for the day.
Poppit & Finch is all about kids and convenience – both a priority to moms.
Thanks to Poppit & Finch I was introduced to Sweetly Detailed.
Definitely one of South Africa’s prettiest bespoke online cakeries.
Shop online for celebration cakes, smash cakes, cake boxes and treats. They have some fun extras too like “Cake of the month”, “Cake Tasting boxes” -for those wanting to try a few flavours and fillings before choosing a favourite – and “Cake Making boxes” – for the mama who loves to DIY.
Soon you will even be able to order celebration decor and styling packages too. These will include a celebration table package (all the cakes, treats and sweets) with a fixed theme. Then pick decor, linen and party supply options that fits in with the “look and feel” of your day. Sweetly Detailed (together with their inhouse stylist – Natja Reney) will then do all the conceptualising and sourcing making sure you and your little one enjoys the party of your dreams. Package prices are fixed but customisable according to the amount of guest attending and your budget.
Now simply have everything delivered to your door or let Sweetly Detailed come and do setup for you.
Natja Reney Lifestylist was such a bonus
I usually do all our parties myself and although I had serious “mom guilt” about letting someone else take the lead for a change; Natja turned out to be such a huge blessing. I knew exactly what I wanted for Ava’s birthday. Natja listened and came up with something even better.
After realising my colourful, bursts of florals would not be possible (or in budget) during winter, Natja suggested an alternative. The way she played with paper decorations, fruits, veggies and the use of plants was so clever and a great way to stay true to Frida’s botanical nature.
Natja sourced everything needed for Ava’s Frida Kahlo inspired birthday party, taking into account our wishes to be as waste and plastic-free as possible. She was also there on the day of the party, to do set-up and styling. I could trust her completely from planning to execution. Together with Natja Reney Lifestylist, Sweetly Detailed is truly a “one-stop-shop” for your entire party, down to every last detail and delicious treat.
On the day!
Everyone woke up excited. We could spend the morning together as a family, getting ready and Ava even enjoyed her morning nap, right on schedule.
I was able to finish the Mexican themed food I had planned.
On the menu we had “build-your-own” nachos and tortilla wraps. The filling included:
- Slow-cooked shredded beef
- Lemon and herb roasted chicken
- Spicy red, black and white beans
As toppings guests added:
- Roasted mixed peppers
- Zesty guacamole
- Fresh salsa
- Sour ream
- Different sauces and diced chillies
We also added bbq corn-on-the-cob, one of Ava’s favourites.
As welcome drinks I also made the best creamy, dark chocolate, hot chocolate to warm up our guests.
I also setup the art activity I had planned for Ava and her guests.
Each little would be painting a self-portrait, just like Frida loved to do but with a pop-art twist…
I had asked all the moms to send me a profile shot of their child. I drew these over to a roll of cupboard vinyl wrapping bought at our local hardware store and stuck each profile onto an A4 canvas. Rollers, brushes and some washable acrylic paint and the littles went wild.
As soon as the paint dries, simply peel-off the sticker to reveal your pretty masterpiece to take home and treasure.
It was a hit and an activity we’ll do again for sure.
Sweetly Detailed, together with Natja Reney Lifestylist arrived early to get our house “party-ready”.
We choose to do a dessert table package. It included all the sweet treats and cakes for the kids and grown-ups to enjoy. I didn’t even have to worry about cake-stands or serving dishes. Sweetly Detailed provided everything. I only put out plates and cake forks.
Sumari and Natja were lovely and welcomed Eliana and Lia’s extra “helping hands”. The girls felt very proud getting to take part in Ava’s party set-up and both have already asked what they need to do to become apart of the Sweetly Detailed team.
With such a vast selection of yummy goodies to choose from, it wasn’t easy but in the end we went with:
- delicate flower lollipops
- decadent chocolate mousse
- pretty petit fours
- fun, ice-cream cake pops
- floral sugar cookies
- colourful macaroons (of course) and
- a mini cinnamon sugared donut tower.
Sumari was kind even enough to make individual cheesecake treats for our vegan friends too.
For the 1st time ever we had 2 cakes. Both cakes stunning and DELICIOUS!
One intended as dessert and used to blow-out Ava’s candle.
The other was a buttercream smash cake for Ava to do with as she please.
Extra’s to enjoy…
Home-made, small, individual fruit salads, MoonBean Vanilla Bean Cookie Bites and party packets filled with Happy Family, Happy Baby Puffs and Vanilla Oats biscuits helped to curb the sugar-rush. All of these are some of our girl’s favourite snacks and available online at Faithful to Nature.
Then Poppit & Finch arrived.
I have to take a moment to mention how amazing Leandrie and her team truly is. Being mothers themselves, they simply have a way of working with little ones and families. We felt completely at ease, doing our thing while they snapped and “video-ed” away, not missing one special moment.
The photos we got were all beautiful, candid shots bursting with love. Every guest was included and arriving early meant the party was also documented perfectly for us to remember. Leandrie also set time out to photograph us as a family as well as our close relatives.
Our video package included a 4 minute highlights reel as well as a full 17 minute video of the day, sent to us on USB in the cutest packaging. A few of the pretty picture were even printed out.
Ava’s Frida Kahlo inspired birthday party was a HIT!
Getting to spend time with everyone we love most was the best. It really was a day of celebration.
Working with all the above mentioned ladies was fantastic and I’ve already booked some of their services again for Lia’s Fairy 4th birthday in October.
Whether you only need a cake, some sweet goodies, a trusted photographer and videographer or all of the above, I urge you to visit Poppit & Finch and Sweetly Detailed online. Using them has made birthday parties so much easier, less stressful and fun.
