I have been obsessed with finding proudly South African loungewear for woman… Pyjama sets, robes and night slips that aren’t just comfy to wear but that’s also beautiful and stylish. As a work-from-home-mom I spend a lot of time going nowhere… Working in between nap times, meal prep, cleaning and play. It’s easy to forget about myself.
I especially remember the early, newborn days of motherhood. Days when getting dressed was an achievement in itself. I cried a lot, laughed a lot and never slept (or that’s what it felt like at least). Days that could really get me under until I one day realised I needed to take care of myself too. Becoming a mom didn’t have to take anything away from me. It was a gift!
I couldn’t afford fancy spa-days. Getting a babysitter to have my hair or nails done, still only happens once in a blue moon… BUT, doing little things for myself, making small changes one at a time soon proved more valuable.
I embraced my season of being a home-body!
Fancy dinners, cocktails during happy hour and dancing the night away didn’t fill my weekends. So, I had no need for sexy, chic outfits. Pyjama drill LUX was the “new black” and I could still dress and feel stylish thanks to BENA Loungewear.
BENA is the best South African loungewear for woman!
Sure, you can find other South African loungewear brands but BENA lasts! The quality keeps, wash after wash, wear after wear. Colours never dull, whites stay bright. The fabrics stay soft and doesn’t wear thin. Every piece I own has also kept it’s fit perfectly – and these days I almost only sleep in BENA.
Another reason to love BENA…
Xan, the momboss behind the brand.
Unable to find classic, stylish PJs for kids. Xan and her sister Charlie, co-found BENA in 2016 with the idea to make kids and maternity sleep and loungewear. A woman’s collection was later added and that’s when things really took off.
Being Mother’s Day soon, I interviewed Xan for some mama self-care insight.
What’s our favourite piece from the new collection?
The Track Set – I have it in all three colour ways. It’s a genius piece of clothing -if I may say so myself. One can wear it around the house, in bed and best of all out and about. Slip on a pair of kicks, and off you go. No one will know you didn’t get dressed that morning.
What has been your biggest struggle as a “momboss” and how have you overcome this?
Finding enough time to “fit it all in” and of course mom-guilt. I also find it difficult to “switch-off” when it comes to BENA. My mind is always going, running in the background, trying to find new ways for BENA to grow and become more successful. I need to learn to switch off during family-time and be present in the moment, as these young years with my kids are so precious, and flying by.
Moms never find time to relax and take care of themselves. How do you “take care of yourself”?
My family was dealt a really tough curve ball last year and we needed to make some real life changing decisions. This culminated in a very sudden move from Johannesburg to Cape Town, which I wasn’t ecstatic about. In one month I needed to pack up, move my family, sell our home, move my business, find schools and a new home in Cape Town. I was close to a nervous breakdown.
I had my bloods checked and found my cortisol levels was far above what was considered healthy. Something serious had to be done.
I made the decision to take time out for my self, no matter what. A drastic change had to be made for the sake of my health as well as my family’s wellbeing and our marriage. I met a wonderful friend in my new hometown who I now walk with every week. Down the greenbelt, with our dogs – come rain or shine, heavy work-load or not!
I remind myself not to feel guilty about it, I deserve it. Regular exercise is another priority.
I also took up a course which runs in the evening, once a week. It’s amazing what that one break from bath and bed time can do for a mama’s soul.
What would be the perfect Mother’s day gift for yourself this year?
I love anything thoughtful. Gifts that make my heart melt. Anything made by my crafty kids, to a weekend away with some girlfriends – those would hit the spot!
BENA is breastfeeding friendly too!
Think gorgeous button down blouses – pretty enough to wear out. You won’t feel self conscious or like a grandma while breastfeeding with ease.
