Never has a painting stirred so many emotions within me. Appreciation, love, happiness… Even sadness over a moment past. Our Little Rose Collection piece is one of our most valuable possessions.
A couple of weeks ago I received a surprise email from the amazingly talented Kim Rose. Wife, mama to William (an almost 4 year old) and the Cape Town artist behind Little Rose Collection.
I couldn’t believe that Kim contacted me. I am a huge fan and have been following her beautiful botanicals collection and custom children’s portraits for a while. Then, earlier this year Kim launched a new series celebrating Motherhood. She creates gorgeous, custom works of art from beautiful images showcasing the awe-inspiring love and connection between a mom and her child/ren. These have been my favourite!
So, when Kim ask if she could possibly do a custom watercolour commission of myself and our daughters as part of the series, I felt overwhelmingly blessed and humbled. Even just being considered and grouped with the amazing moms Kim had already painted was an honour. Getting to take part in the process… That’s a bonus!
Choosing a photo for Kim to replicate, made it all the more special.
I wanted it to be an image from our everyday life. A moments that all of us will be reminiscing over for years to come. One that showed our love and bond at first glance. Kim had some great tips and guidelines on selecting the right image and after I sent her a few options, we decided this one would be the best.
I love the way this shot by my friend, Anje from Madison and West sums up the mother-daughter AND sister siblings bond we all share.
Then Kim added her magic touch.
I received a first draft, a pencil sketch of what Kim had planned. Cropping the photo, giving me an idea of what to expect.
Then the second draft, watercolours added but nothing was set in stone and if need be, changes could still be made. Kim is so kind, listening to and considering all my buck tooth, screw eyed paranoia. She happily reworked the portrait wanting us to be completely satisfied and happy with this special piece.
After only a few email correspondences the piece was done and perfect.
I couldn’t resist having Kim frame it right away. It needed to be hung and admired from the moment it found its way home.
From photo to artwork this has been an incredible experience.
Kim loves creating beautiful and meaningful pieces for people to treasure forever. She wants her work to reflect back to us the beauty that is in this world. To me this work is a reminder of all that I have to be grateful for and the wonderful life I get to share with our 3 girls.
Hung in our living room, above our little play corner… Not a day goes by that I don’t look up in appreciation, admiring this treasured work of art (and I regularly catch the girls doing the same).
This is the perfect gift for any mom and with Mother’s Day around the corner be sure to check out the Kim Rose website. You can also see the entire Motherhood series on the Little Rose Collection Instagram account and remember to like the Kim Rose Art Facebook page.
