The Ultimate Christmas Movie List for 2018

Dec 12, 2018
MA 17 of 36

Get the popcorn because it’s that time of year when it’s okay to be a little naughty, and overindulge in some good old screen time. Find out which movies we watch year-after-year. Which animations are our favourite, the romantic comedies that give us all the feels and the movie releases we are most looking forward to.

This is the only Christmas Movie List you’ll ever need, with something for everyone!

10 Christmas movies we watch every year

1.The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

This might not be a movie about Christmas but both Mr. Perfect and I are MASSIVE fans from even before we met.

December 2001, 2002 and 2003 all included movie tickets to the cinema releases of The Fellowship of the RingThe Two Towers and The Return of the King. Now, years later, watching the entire series during the month of December has become “our thing”.

2.The Grinch

In our home The Grinch plays at least once a week… It’s Lia’s all time favourite movie and book so, we have many variations. The 2000 Jim Carrey film is however her favourite. It’s so over the top but still every part as beautiful as the original – An all round crowd pleaser.

3.A Christmas Carol

Our girls are still too young for the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol but we can’t wait to share it with them at one of our future family movie nights someday…

5.Home Alone

Would it even be Christmas without Kevin McCallister?

6.The Holiday

Hands-down my favourite festive romantic comedy!

7.Fred Claus

A peek into Santa’s family life…

Three unconventional choices we adore;

9.Edward Scissor Hands

10.The Nightmare before Christmas

Top festive picks on Netflix

The Christmas Chronicles

Our number one Netflix pick! The Christmas Chronicles includes everything you want a good Santa movie to have… Music, magic, adventure, cute elves and even Santa being a little naughty. It’s just good fun and Mrs. Claus’s appearance, right at the end made it even better!

The next movie doesn’t need any intro really…

Love Actually

2 MUST SEE movies poking fun at the “silliness” of the season are;

Christmas with the Kranks

4 Christmases

A great family comedy the little ones especially enjoy…

And if your Mr. Perfect has the same humour as mine…

The night before

But I need to warn you, this one is very naughty!

Beautiful animations for the entire family include;

Angela’s Christmas

The Polar Express

Rise of the Guardians

Shrek deck the halls

Two new Netflix originals overflowing with all the typical charms of the season…

The Princess switch

The Holiday calendar

New movie releases from Ster-Kinekor

We only recently started braving the cinemas again with our girls… Although watching a movie is good fun for the entire family, movie theaters never seemed very kid-friendly.

Lia would keep sliding off the booster seat, Eliana would get uncomfortable and waiting for the feature to start would almost definitely result in a second popcorn run.

Ster Kinekor has heard our cries, physically, and have come up with the perfect solution.

The 2D Kids Cinema.
Sterkinekor 2D kids cinema

Specifically designed for kids, with a dedicated waiting area to keep them entertained before moving into the cinema – it also acts as a great escape zone for younger siblings that can’t make it through a full feature. Inside colourful beanbag seating and an indoor slide with a foam pond makes watching a movie more fun than ever!

The girls loved it and so did we. The bean bag chairs are super comfy even for adults and sliding inside a movie theater, SO cool – Ava obviously needed mommy to show her how before trying it on her own.

Currently Ster Kinekor has four 2D Kids Cinemas;
  • Sandton City
  • East Rand Mall
  • Fourways Mall and
  • Centurion Mall

Don’t worry however, more will be coming soon. In the meantime be sure to visit one closest to home. Ster Kinekor has an awesome holiday lineup for kids of all ages. Obviously we’ve already seen The Grinch so next will be Mary Poppins Returns!

The Grinch

A newly imagined take on the grumpy green grouch who spends his days being nasty to everyone – except, perhaps, his dog Max. The Grinch especially hates Christmas, and plots to ruin the day for the village of Whoville – by stealing it. Based on the hugely popular story by Dr Seuss,

The Grinch.  The Grinch releases on the 7 December in 2D, 3D & IMAX.

Elliot: Littlest Reindeer

When Blitzen announces his retirement on December 21st, Elliot has three days to fulfil his lifelong dream of earning a place in Santa’s team. Meanwhile, his best friend Hazel discovers that back at the farm, their friends’ lives are in danger. Elliot has to choose – will he save Christmas, or his friends? Can he possibly do both?

Ralph Breaks the Internet

Video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz navigate the vast and dynamic world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush.

-Ster Kinekor

Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse

Miles Morales is a schoolboy with all the usual problems, including embarrassing parents. He’s also Spider-Man –  but he’s not the only one, as he discovers when another Spider-Man, Peter B. Parker turns up. And there are many more! Crossing parallel dimensions, Miles teams up with the Spider-Men of other dimensions to stop a threat to all reality.

Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse is animated in a ground-breaking new visual style. It releases in 2D, 3D and D-Box on 14 December 2018.

Mary Poppins Returns

Several decades after she floated off into the sky, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family. Emily Blunt stars as the practically perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure. With her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter they bring light – and life – to the streets of London.

Mary Poppins Returns releases on 28 December to 2D and IMAX.

Other awesome movies to watch over the holidays

One more animation;

Arthur Christmas

Then there’s always room for one more Holiday “rom-com”.  Mr. Perfect and I both really enjoyed these two – especially because they include two of our favourite actors. Ryan Reynolds and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Just Friends

The Family Stone

Lastly, I include 3 of my own childhood “bests”… The Muppets, Charlie Brown and who doesn’t need the gift of Danny DeVito over Christmas?

I have fond memories of our entire family watching these on M-Net’s Christmas Special all those years ago.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Charlie Brown

Deck the Halls
